Green, Green Grass of Home

Elvis Presley Lyrics Words & Music by Claude Putman, Jr. Elvis Presley Lyrics

The old home town looks the same,
As I step down from the train,
And there to meet me is my mama and papa
Down the road I look and there runs Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home

Yes, they'll all be there to meet me,
All creatures smiling sweetly
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home

The old house is still standing,
Though the paint is cracked and dry
And there's an old oak tree that I used to play on
Down the lane I'll walk with my sweet Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green, green grass of home

Then I awake and look around me
Cold gray walls surround me
And I realize that I was only dreamin'
There's a guard and there's a sad old padre
Arm and arm we'll walk at daybreak
Again I'll touch the green, green grass of home

Yes, they'll all be there to meet me
In the shadow of that old oak tree
As they lay me beneath the green, green grass of home

January 20, 1975 - Elvis put down a deposit of $75,000 on an impounded Boeing 707 but the deal fallsl through. The previous owner had been Robert Vesco, the fugitive financier who had fled to South America after allegedly embezzling hundreds of millions of dollars from international investment firms. Buying his plane would involve some complicated wrangling with the IRS. And Elvis was warned about another complication: If the plane ever landed in any of the countries Vesco was establishing a base in, there was every reason to believe that he might try to seize it. In April Elvis buys a Convair 880 Jet recently taken out of service by Delta Airlines for the then-substantial sum of $250,000. With complete refurbishing the total exceeded $600,000.

He immediately rechristened it the Lisa Marie.

Late January 1975, instead of in Las Vegas for his usual season Elvis is admitted to Baptist Memorial Hospital. Several physical problems forced him to stay in the hospital until February 14, but no surgery was necessary. A positive side effect of Elvis' stay in the hospital was that he kicked off a bit from unnecessary addictive pills.

The cancelled shows from January/February were moved to the second half of March.

February 5, Vernon Presley has a heart attack and is admitted to the hospital, where he recuperates in a room next to Elvis' - Linda Thompson outside Baptist Memorial Hospital Elvis Presley Photos - Feb 12, 1975

February 14, Elvis is discharged from the hospital, returning to Graceland to recuperate.

March 3, Elvis flies to California for a recording session that starts on March 10.

March 10, 1975 - The session that would make up Elvis''Today' album begins at RCA's Sunset Boulevard Studios at 9.00am when Elvis arrives with Sheila Ryan and Lisa Marie.

The 'parade' footage is good to see as it puts you in the right context with color and b&w footage. The interviews of Elvis' Parents are well worth hearing too. The afternoon show footage is wonderful and electrifying : Here is Elvis in his prime rocking and rolling in front of 11.000 people. Highly recommended.
